Pray For Boldness

Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness. Stretch out your hand to heal and perform miraculous signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly _ Acts 4:29-31
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere--in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." _ Acts 1:8

I have been wondering a lot lately about something...Are we truly bold enough to be witnesses for the Lord and share the testimony of Gods grace to those around us in our everyday lives. AND even more, Are we bold enough and brave enough, passionate and fanatical enough to think that making disciples and sharing the testimony of God's grace can be done through us even on an international level?

One thing I have noticed lately is a vibrant and exciting trend for social justice, and my generation especially are catalysts for this. To stand up against human trafficking, against world hunger, against inequality and abuse and terrorism and child soldiers, and the list can go on. I'm proud of this trend...but I have a slight concern for one thing... Is it possible that all this wonderful hype -to be change in the world- can possibly shift our focus from the glory of God to the the glory of humanity? What I mean is this (and I'm confident that it is assumed, but I really actually am a little concerned it gets forgotten, even by me)

Our primary purpose in life is to Glorify God; and since not everyone on earth is doing that, God decided to use his church, to testify about Him to those who are not glorifying Him, so that they might know and glorify Him too.

Missions Exists Because Worship Doesn't- John Piper

Social justice fits in this (it truly cannot be separated from the gospel) but our primary goal is still to testify of the grace of God for his Glory to win souls for him for hope of their eternity. There are a vast number of organizations that do not know the Lord who also do great social justice things. We as the church need to be careful that we seek to be a testimony and light in WORD, as much as in DEED, it's what will set us apart from the world so that nations can know God. How else will they see the deeds we do and attribute it to God if we are simply doing what every other humanitarian organization is doing?

I tried figuring out why I have heard such a passion for social justice more then I have heard a passion for evangelism and proclaiming the gospel, especially when considering attaining such a goal on an international level.

If one of the greatest barriers in going global with the gospel is the spiritual depravity in our own backyard that compels us to witness here first, then could it not be equally argued that we have social needs in our own back yard as well? We recognize that social justice is necessary across the globe even though there are deep social needs to also be met here as well... BUT Maybe you argue there are many places in the world where their social needs are so much greater then ours...but isn't this also the case for spiritual depravity?

In North America, we practically have access to a church in every community, and at best most everyone here is in contact with at least one Christian that can witness to them; where as according to www.joshuaproject.net., 41% of the worlds population is unreached, without the Gospel or any testimony of a believing Christian near them to share the grace and love of Christ.

Do we share the same passion for such a spiritual depravity in our world? Social justice is biblical and necessary; it's meeting a great and essential need. But what then? We can go to the nations and help provide even-distribution, create a more universal middle class, promote equality and freedom and human rights...but then what? Without Jesus, people will still go to hell.

My greatest fear is that we might without realizing it be creating a mantra for Humanism and such love for people that it trumps our love for God. I am NOT saying that we should ONLY evangelize, NOR am I saying to stop being so zealous for social justice, both are necessary and they essentially cannot be separated...but my point is that I fear that often the two ARE separated and the proclamation and testimony of Christ is most often what can be diminished to the sidelines.

Spiritual depravity is everywhere, but as an example, it is greatly forgotten about in affluent countries that already have their social needs met. These are some of the most challenging countries and people groups to minister to, primarily among people groups in Western Europe where there is a drastic falling away from God. I heard a wise man once share an analogy of these countries in how they are often reluctant to receive the gospel. He shared:

In the perspective of famine and someone who has not eaten for a very long time, it has been said that they somewhat lose their feeling of hunger over time. The same can be attributed to someone who experiences Spiritual Famine, they don't even realize how severely malnourished they are.

And even though this might be true, it doesn't relinquish our responsibility to go. Ezekiel's call was not dependent on his success of converting the people he was going to, but rather his call was dependent on his obedience to be a mouthpiece and witness for God, for the glory of God. (Ezek. 2:3-5)

But the reality is, we can never actually know which of the seeds of truth that we sow will grow and which will die, only God can know that because it is only God who can change peoples hearts, BUT its is our job to SOW. Bill Hybles shared at this years Global Leadership Summit, that the Parable of the Sower had only a 25% ratio of a good crop, despite the other 75% of seeds that were sown and died. His conclusion: If you want to see more transformed lives, you simply have to sow more seed! (Matt 13:3-8)

So I continued to try to figure out why there is so much more zeal today for social justice, then there is for evangelism and the proclamation of the gospel on a global level. This was my conclusion...

We live in a time when our realization of world disaster is more common then we ever knew before. We see the brokenness of our earth and the brokenness of humanity and it stirs something within us; causes us to act. We as humans empathize with brokenness; we all do, even if we have never gone through it in the same way nor the same capacity. But we realize the frailty of life and recognize injustice and desire to stand united for change. But how much of our hearts are drawn more to meet their needs then to meet their greater depravity, their hearts. Where is God in all this? Especially we should ask ourselves, where is God in our motives as we reach in our pockets and share our years for what we are capable of giving, but neglect to draw from HIM what we cannot give... What can we not give?... Salvation. Truth is they may live longer and better quality of lives when we help meet needs of social justice, but they will still go to hell if they do not know Jesus.

I don't want to simply promote missions or evangelism. I rather would rather promote Christ. To be passionate about him and the glory of his name and the responsibility that our adoption must also compel us to act as it is our responsibility as co-heirs with Christ in God's Mission (Rom 8:17, Rom 10:13-15)

I would love to challenge people to do that with so much heart and passion that they radically believe that they can even make a difference to the ends of the earth by doing so, because Christ transforms people and gives eternal life. My desire is that people would get so revved up on the zeal for the Lord that they will be compelled to run to the nations to transform nations through Him. What in us gives us such passion to see change that causes us to run to the nations to promote global change for humanity?... It is zeal for the Glory of God and Glory of His Name, that will cause us to run to the nations to promote hope and eternal life and boldly proclaim the Word of God and of the God if grace because he transformed even us! When we really grasp this, we cannot help but testify. Consider every testimony of everyone who had a personal encounter with Christ in the New Testament; their immediate response was that they told somebody! They simply could not keep quiet.

So just as the early church did, so is my prayer -with assurance not in myself but in Christ in me- to pray that the Lord would give me boldness to preach the word of God, even as far as the ends of the earth. And if he doesn't bring me to the ends of the earth... then I will make it my mission to join in His mission to see that someone does bring it there, for this is His greatest burden, and the proclamation of His Word and His Name to all people, is what we were created for. I pray he helps me to maintain His focus.

Ring me Out

Yesterdays Arrival: Oct 3, 2012

I arrived in Calgary today -in fact just now as I stopped for a bite to eat while waiting for my land lady to get home and let me in; so I am sitting at a Smitty’s with my car still packed with my things.  This is just another transition before getting to Spain although I am realizing more and more that this part of the journey is just as significant as the destination and it will be yet another opportunity to be used by my God.

I truly loved the drive. I had decided to stop halfway in Swift Current for the night, and today was the final stretch.

It was an easy stretch of highway that I almost didn’t want to end…It was the greatest worship time I have had in years, just hours of singing, praying, audio bible and sermons, with more and more singing and more and more praying and listening and soaking in the presence of my God.

I praised the Lord for the transition this time, looking out to the vast prairies that went on for miles. It was the pivotal transition place, the sentiment of between homes, between the places that I called home, the cities that contain the scenery but even more importantly they contain some of the people most dear to my heart that makes it home, and even in my deepest emotional attachment to them that weighs my heart in saying goodbye…still….my heart was full.  God is enough, he whispers in my ears…Jesus is my first love…He reminds me as I sense the grip of His hand leading me ahead…The Holy Spirit is alive and well in me and there is no where that I can go to escape the presence of the Lord, He will be with me.

I imagined my heart as a sponge; filled and sopping wet, heavy and dripping behind the car as I drove. I prayed, “LORD, do not ring me out yet! “ Finally I sense you so close, you fill me up, you are my everything, do not let this feeling pass me by. My heart was so full I was consumed; it felt like new love, like the stirring sensation in my spirit. I was whole in Him, being in the presence of the one who has consumed my thoughts, stolen my heart and given me unwavering and immeasurable love beyond all comprehension. I prayed again, “Lord please do not yet ring me out, I need you.” And I imagined that this is actually what is supposed to happen...I imagined getting to Calgary and being full and satisfied…and unable to soak anymore from what waits for me in Calgary. He needed to ring me out… for life, and for people. Even ring me out over people that He would drip through me. And as I am rang out I draw near him again, and He fills me, and again he rings me out. I thought about other things in my life I could deceive myself to think it was filling me up, but it was just a deception, and the only thing that actually saturates and satisfies us is Him. Then I realized, He will have to ring me out but He will not leave me dry, He is living water and will satisfy me with everything I need to be fulfilled.

This journey has certainly had a great number of mixed emotions and being the sensitive girl that I am; I am full of them.

For a long while I was sensing the great losses and mixed emotions of saying goodbye and transition. All the while I was still feeling greatly convicted to the calling of ministry in Spain and for the burden of the souls that do not yet know my Jesus. And in the midst of that all I still had measures of great excitement for what the Lord is calling me to…
What does He want with me in Spain...in Calgary?
What does He have in mind for me?
Even now the thought tickles me, as I know His great love for me and His great love to use me-His Bride- to accomplish things far too big for me to glorify Him.

Praising my Maker, the author and creator of life, and the writer of my life story…praising Him for the journey…it’s all about the Journey.
Lord, wherever you go, I will follow you.

Vessels of Living Water

Issue #4 SEPTEMBER 2012

Vessels of Living Water

by Melissa Bartel

Dear Friends, Family and Ministry Partners:
Let me share with you an analogy that I heard from a wise missionionary while at my language aquisitions course.
In a land full of lakes, a mediocre vessel or even a marvelous vessel that is filled with living water is insignificant. However to a dessert land, even the most mediocre vessel when filled with living water is the most invaluable resource.  The vessel itself has very little relevance in fact, and will probably go unnoticed, but it holds the most invaluable source of life that when it's transportable, it can have the most distinctive purpose.  Christ is the living water within me, and he is transporting this mediocre vessel to a dessert land; Preparing for the mission field in Spain.

It is for the souls that I go, and it is for the call that I will stay.
Who knows how long that we have left in this world; any of us, and I want to make my days count.
I have loved the time of preparation that the Lord has given me over the last 7 years. The time of rich ministry experience that He placed at my door, bible school, outreach, young adults ministry, and even just the friends I made and grew to love deeply; those who made commitments to the Lord and those to my knowing have not. He burdens my heart greatly for those who have not.
I'm still pressing ahead with all that I have, and I am prepared to go to Spain in His timing and have done all that I can in my strength as he leads me, but I still need more people to prayerfully and finacially partner with me to reach the ministry in Spain that he is preparing for me.

I had prepared myself for a September departure but have not yet acquired the full monthly and ongoing support yet to do so. I praising the Lord for His radical provision to bring me to 60% and praying that he would bring me to the full 100% that is required before I can book my flight to Spain where I will live for the next five years. My last 40% came in 10 days time and I believe that it can happen again if the Lord wills it. In the meantime, I will be moving to Calgary to continue in supoprt raising and partner development as best I can as I prepare for my departure to Spain, and I am excited for all that this move will bring in ministry opportunities and support.
I attached an exciting PHOTO TIMELINE of my busy spring/summer to bring you up to speed since my last newsletter last May.

Thank you for following the journey, and for your prayers, encouragement and support. I'm greatly indebted to you and I pray the Lord rewards you in full for what I cannot even begin to repay to you.
Leaning on the Almighty,

Celebrate :)

Today is my birthday!! It's a special day! God is using this little girl and making the most out of me, and its wonderful.

I didnt anticipate spending my 29th birthday at the airport, but regardless its been a wonderful wrap up of two weeks of support raising, orientation and classes. As I wrapped up at my Language Acquisition class this afternoon I was reminded again how incredibly wonderful it is to be in the midst of the plans the Lord has for me. Also it was so rich a blessing to be surrounded by so many on the same journey as me to proclaim the gospel and live out the power of the testimony that the Lord has given us, and who can identify also in the losses of the cost of saying goodbye to our life here to go to a career in ministry in a foreign land. Thank goodness I can relate to others when I get exhausted and weak and overwhelmed and also when I'm so excited at what is ahead!

I may as well let you also know of my prayerful consideration and plans to move to Calgary in September until my departure to Spain. Another transition, but I'm excited for it as Calgary has always been home for me. I look forward to getting reconnected with my church, friends, supporters, mentors and family.

I am still remaining packed and ready for an anticipated September departure date to Spain, however am waiting on the Lord to raise up individuals wherever they might be to meet the final 40% of my monthly ongoing pledges to be fully supported and also waiting on my visa.

Prayer Requests:

- Pray with me for the ongoing transitions, even to Calgary. these last days have been exciting and refreshing and I thank you for those who are with me in this journey. Lord bless you richly, I pray for you too!!

- pray for rest and health, i have toncilitus :(

- pray for the remaining support 40% monthly pledges remaining to reach full support which is required by SEND before I can leave.

- pray for my visa that it comes promptly but not before my support, soon as it is approved I have only 30 days to leave the country.

Praise:

- my big brother is getting baptized I'm so excited!!

- I feel increasingly excited and confirmed of the Lords plans for me

- for the support, classes and preparation that has all taken place since Spring, it has been such a blessing.

By His Grace,

Missy

Gypsy Fever in Toronto

Gypsy Fever

Strange headline? Let me explain…

I have been on the road basically for the last 3 months with my projected departure date to Spain around a month away; and I have been wrestling in my mind to make sense of all the many rich and yet challenging steps on this journey to the mission field. Part this journey is so edifying in how the Lord has created me and is leading me, and part if it is scandalous to my identity…lately in my heart I have been feeling homeless, lost and stripped of who I feel I am.

Let me share a few analogies I have heard today from missionaries also on this journey; and even though they didn’t know it at the time, they so clearly articulated my heart that I cried at hearing them.

Feeling Busted up a Little

We have heard of the jars of clay analogy before…but I have never heard this analogy quite like this. So if you have you ever felt inadequate before or insignificant to be used by God, that’s perfect! This analogy is for you, and me.

Some people can be so put together, so marked with godliness, and in right relationship with the Lord that it just beams in them, fills them to the brim and fills them with rich light and love. This was the analogy expressed by my classmate in the beginning of his testimony.

He then took a small empty box and he put on an overhead projector upside down, and turned on the light that then filled the box. He said this was how he initially saw his life; he was filled with the Lord and he knew Him and he even knew the Lord was with him. But the wall remained dark; and then he turned off the light and continued in his analogy.

He went on to express some very difficult trials that the Lord had began to bring his way in family circumstances and in life. He then had asked someone to bust up the box immeasurably; which it actually ended in two pieces and with numerous holes. He explained this is what his life looked like now, broken, and unrecognizable to some extent; but still he had great confidence in the Lord, and the Lords presence and the Lords providence in all of these circumstances. He then put the box back on the overhead projector and turned on the light; this time through the brokenness the wall shone.

His testimony was clear: The Lord will greatly shine through our brokenness, which is why it is truly best to embrace the Lord in His sovereignty when trials and challenges come our way. Why do we even feel as though life is supposed to look perfect? We can rejoice that we are broken jars of clay and that the Lord by His power can then best shine through us.
(2 Corinthians 4:5-18)  Great biblical read! Great testimony!

Later at lunch I sat down with an older missionary man
on his way to disciple missionaries in Costa Rica, He began to tell me stories and after he chuckled and admitted that he had no idea why he went off on such banter. At that I began to express to him how incredibly relevant those stories were to my life at this time and I began to weep. So he told me one more story which ironically was also so incredibly relevant to my life and tears continued to rolls down my cheeks and when he was finished the story he made no application or anything…he simply said and “and now I will stop” and just smiled at me. I think he knew that no application was needed; his word was for me at that time and very well articulated as a word from the Lord in how it applied to my life. These are a few analogies he left with me.

Created for Flowers or Apples

Apple trees are truly gorgeous for a time, as they form pedals and leaves and bloom to show their radiant and remarkable beauty.  However apple trees were not created for their flowers even though the flowers are quite remarkable, the are merely an indication of the process of fruit that is being produced which is what they are actually created for…apples. Although the tree doesn’t leap from flower to apple, the flower of course must first fall away completely making way for the seed that is beneath to grow to its full fruition. The beautiful pedals are naturally stripped away one by one, and what once stood magnificently as a glorious flower tree makes way for its intended apples. Our lives are as such, especially as a Christ follower, especially as an incarnational missionary. We like to cling to the flowers that we produce, we are even proud of them, we look beautiful and our identity is somewhat established in them. Then all a sudden the season changes and the pedals drop one by one, and we are left delirious and challenged as our identity is striped away. But once we truly allow our identity to fade and we remember the purpose to which we were called to, we begin to see that the apple is the identity that we were truly called to bare. In life as a Christ follower  (and incarnational missionary) we are called to deny ourselves and take up our cross as Christ first did, and as we do we will fade to the background as intended and allow the fruits of the Spirit to shine through us for a lost and broken world to see. (Luke 9:23-24)

The Vessel of Living Water

In a land full of lakes, a mediocre vessel or even a marvelous vessel filled with living water is insignificant. However to a dessert land, even the most mediocre vessel when filled with living water is the most invaluable resource.  The vessel itself has very little relevance in fact, and will probably go unnoticed, but it holds the most invaluable source of life that when movable can have the most distinctive purpose.  Our true value is defined from what’s within us, its where our greatest purpose comes from.

A Naked Gypsy

So in the process of travel, saying goodbye a million times, transition, losing my sense of home and sense of identity, being stripped of who I am, who I was, and wondering who I will be in this new world of Spain…I realize its all part of the process. Although I feel exposed in many ways, and home becomes a blurry word, I remember this journey my Lord has walked before; first as babe, and all the way to the cross.  So I too must remember the relevance of being broken and denying myself for Christ, deny myself for Him to shine and allow the pruning to bare much fruit as intended, to allow my identity to be filled with Christ whom lives in me, and remember this earth is all our temporary home.

Funny Story

As you might know, I was just in Alberta nearly a week to do a little more support raising and meet  up with friends and family.  Once there, I was aching to see the mountains, and so I decided last sunday afternoon to take a drive about an hour west on the Trans-Canada highway  to a small town called Canmore...
Trans Canada to Canmore AB

Alberta Driving
Ready for the Road Ahead

Now you might also know that I have been basically on the road since the beginning of June with short periods of time in and out of Winnipeg in between...So I admittedly have been a little tired.
I didn't have a lot of time in Alberta, so I needed to make the most out of it. I spoke in a church that morning then went for lunch with friends, then wanted to chill in the mountains until I had to be back for the evening service at my home church there.

By the time I arrived in Canmore I was sooo tired, I needed to just shut my eyes briefly. So I pulled into a residential street and took a short nap in the drivers seat of my car. Once I woke up I looked at my clock and realized I needed to head back to the city for church.

I basically drove to the mountains to have a nap then drove back...At least the drive was pretty.

The End.

btw...

Feeling the Transition

It is the strangest feeling in the world! As though I am already gone...I wrestle with connecting with this world in Winnipeg and every world I visit because it seems like I am forever saying goodbye. I have been on the road on and off  now since June 8th and its not about to end until August 25th, with only a short few weeks then till I am saying my BIG FAREWELL to leave to Spain....And I don't wish it to stretch out, I wish it to come quicker because I know that this hazy feeling I'm in will only linger now until I reach my next destination...my next transition, into a world I do not know....into Spain.

I am so very excited for all that is ahead, and I am so very excited for all that is here too...but its the transition...the dreadful transition that brings tears to my eyes, the transition out of Canada and the anticipated transition into Spain; and the loneliness of so desperately waiting for it all to feel normal again.

Strangely to me transition always feels like this; and it doens't matter if Im coming or going...It's like when you meet a friend for the first time, and you think they are really cool but its super awkward to hang out at first. And you get those lingering awkward silences not knowing what else you can possibly say to fill dead space, and you begin to long for the time when it will simply be comfortable to sit in each others silence, but for the moment, its uncomfortable and still dependent on simply time spent together in many awkward silences before you will rest in a comfortable moment of simply living. And the moment will hit you without you even realizing it. You don't realize when you are out of the transition because it happens so subtlely and naturally, you just feel as though it was always normal feeling and you totally forget the slow and awkward beginning....perhaps its only me who finds transitions this uncomfortable.

So here I am, I simply have left my bags packed since June waiting for the next departure, and desperately trying to still live in today. Perhaps this gets easier...but for now I feel like I am forever saying goodbye every time I repack my bag and journey out to another destination.
...
Early in the morning I will hit a long road to Calgary again, and I do anticipate the drive to be great; some time to pray, sing, listen to my audio bible and reflect on everything that I have been soaking in.

The LORD is GREAT, and is my refuge and strength. I will press into Him in this transition, and I know that he has seen my tears and also my joy though each step of the way. I trust Him. But for now, I simply cannot wait till I am settled and once again feel grounded and normal, out of such transition.

Gen 22:14 The Lord will Provide

What could exchange this heart of mine beating rapidly all day long? I'm sure that nothing can beat this feeling...The race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong as it says in Ecclesiastes 9:11, and I am the perfect example of this. My heart beats at the surprise, at the wonderment, at the awe of my great Lord.

It's strange, His provision...it's strange because there are times that I am crazy enough to doubt it and then find myself in complete reverence of Him when I observe the outstanding things that He calls me to and then also goes on to provide the way. But the Lord has always been a provider, and it should bring us no surprise. Even Abraham reminds us of this when the Lord provided a lamb:

Abraham called the name of that place The LORD Will Provide, as it is said to this day, “In the mount of the LORD it will be provided.”

My financial support was 23% ten days ago and has climbed to 45% today in the last minute! How is that possible? Only the Lord! The Lord has Provided.

Psalm 8:4
what is man that you are mindful of him,
and the son of man that you care for him?

I am overwhelmed with gratitude, and there is so much joy in my heart at His call, His Equipping, His Provision, and His Sending me! And also to all who are standing with me! Praying, Supporting, Donating, Spreading the Word of the Ministry in Spain that He has for me! Thank you! Thank you!! Thank you... His plans are too big for me...but this little girl will be available and willing to be used by Him and for Him in all He calls me to as much as His Spirit Enables me.

PRAY WITH ME FOR THE FINAL SUPPORT!
I have till this tuesday to reach the final 5% of support to get me to training in July!
2.5 ppl at $100/mo. or 6 ppl at $35/mo.
Call or email SEND if you are one of these at:
1(888) 918-5036 or info@sendcanada.org

 AND THEN
We have only July and August to reach the final 50% to depart in September to join my outgoing teammates in Language School. Pray with me, He is a big God who will provide for us all He calls us to, but He wants us to ask Him...."So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields."_Matt 9:38
